Marjorie (Jones) Pfeffer

October 18, 1923 — October 5, 2021

Conrad

Doris Marjorie (Jones) Pfeffer was born in Conrad October 18, 1923 and passed away unexpectedly from natural causes with her daughter, Sharon, by her side October 5, 2021 just shy of her 98th birthday. Her parents Ethel M. Jones (1887-1972) and Edward Jones (1873-1963) were both born in central Wales and were pioneers in the Conrad area. Her father came to Montana in1890 and worked as a cowboy and ranch hand until he homesteaded near Pendroy and started his family and ran his own ranch and farm. Marjorie was one of five children attending country schools during the Great Depression. In those days water was hauled from the creek running from the spring up on the hill. Heat was coal shoveled into the stove and light was from kerosene lanterns. After the untimely and tragic deaths of her little brother, Evan, and her older sister, Ethel Ivy, over a short time interval Grandpa Jones moved the family to Wales where Marjorie and her brother, Llewellyn, and her sister, Hazel, attended Builth Wells Council schools, graduating near the start of World War II. She worked for the National Bank in Builth Wells Wales during the war. She had stories of the German spy who lived in the area and was eventually captured. After the war she and her family returned to Conrad to stay. However, her older sister, Hazel, had married and remained in Wales on the family farm Glanwhefru. Travel in those days was steamship across the Atlantic with their final voyage being on the Queen Mary and steam trains across North America. She recalled the rural electrification project of FDR and electricity came to the ranch in the early 1950's. Water was moved by a pump and lights came on with the flick of a switch. Her father told her many stories of life in Northern Montana during the 1890's and early 1900's. During the 1900's her mother's 2 brothers moved to Conrad and homesteaded and her father's brother and other relatives also homesteaded in the Conrad area. Some of these gained US citizenship by fighting for the US Army during World War I. She met and married Marvin John Pfeffer. Together they raised their family of four. After the birth of her last daughter, Sharon, she was able to stay home and enjoy being a full time homemaker. She loved quilting, cooking, collecting recipes, corresponding with family in Wales, and made several trips to there to visit her sister and numerous other relatives. She loved time with her children, grandchildren, traveling to Glacier Park and visiting the ranch where she had spent her early days. After they built their house on Main Street in Conrad she lived there until her very last day even after being widowed 30 years previously. She is survived by her children, Robert David Pfeffer (Colette) and their children, Jeramie and Jenelle; and Sharon (Steve) Childers and their children, Travis and Ashley. She was preceded by her little brother, Evan"Sandy" Jones; her sister, Ivy Jones; her parents; her daughters, Mary Catherine Pfeffer and Beverly Ann Pfeffer; her husband, Marvin John Pfeffer; her brother, Llewellyn Edward Jones; her oldest sister, Hazel Jones Richards.

We will all miss her cheery personality, her lovely smile and her lovely green eyes. We will all recall her voice with a bit of Welsh accent and phrases used during pioneer days and also the stories she told from a long and interesting life.
