Marguerite V. (Verstraete) Freebury

October 30, 1931 — February 23, 2023

Conrad

Marguerite Rachael (Verstraete) Freebury, 91, passed on Thursday, February 23, 2023 of renal kidney failure. 1 of 6 kids born to Emil and Marie Verstraete. She was the middle child of 4 sisters and 2 brothers. In 1951 she married her neighbor boy and love of her life, Richard “Dick” Freebury.

Marguerite went to the Lone Tree School until 8th grade and was a very smart lady. She and Dick built a farming and ranching operation together. They were side by side no matter what. Marguerite loved her animals, cattle, chickens, and pets. In 1962 they adopted a son, David. He was the light of their life. Marguerite would take him out to the field to play with her when Dick was farming and taught him so much. Teaching Dave to cook so if she was needed outside, he could cook the meals. She loved camping and fishing and usually caught more fish!

Marguerite was truly an outdoor woman, being outside every day her whole life working from fixing fence, driving the tractor baling, truck driving, pitching hay bales, shoveling grain, doing the calving, and pulling the calves herself. She did it all well into her 80’s. She was retired but to a farm/ranch wife, you are never quite done with it all. When she was in the house, she loved sewing, and was involved in a sewing club with the neighbor ladies.  They did many projects together. Later when her nieces and nephews had kids, and graduated, she would sew blue jean quilts for each one. Something to keep them warm and have a keepsake. She also devised a “Kangaroo” blanket to place babies into. It had a pocket for when the children were young and when older the pocket pulled out legs to be used in car seats. She made many of the blankets for relatives and Dave’s friends. Marguerite was amazing! You would never know a harder working wife, mother, or friend in the community and willing to help anyone.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father; husband, Richard; brother, Carl; sisters, Theresa and Christine; nephew, Larry; and brothers-in-law. She leaves behind her son, David; sister, Maria Erickson; brother, Antonie Verstraete; many nieces and nephews and their children.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 2, at 2pm at Asper/Pondera Funeral Homes.

She was loved by all.
