George A. Egan

February 12, 1936 — November 17, 2020

Conrad

George Alvin Egan, born in Kalispell Montana on February 12th, 1936 to Tom and Marie Egan, died in Conrad, Montana this past November 17th, 2020 surrounded by love and family. George’s early life included school, various jobs, and the US Army where he served in Oklahoma and earned recognition as a sharpshooter and skilled driver.

In 1960, he met the love of his life Beverly Jean Dabney, who he lovingly referred to as the “War Department”. They later married in Conrad, Montana in 1961. George operated heavy equipment on large scale projects throughout Montana before acquiring his father’s business, Egan Metal Products, in 1969.

George greatly expanded Egan Metal Products’ business, starting from HVAC and metal works to include innovative farm machinery repair that drew customers from around the USA. After retiring from the business, George drove bus for the Conrad School District for 14 years, a career change that led to many bus stories, perhaps too many according to his family.

Capturing the essence of a man in a few sentences is challenging. With George, it is impossible. His friends called him Gorgeous George or Puddin’ Pie. His family called him husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. George’s customers at Egan Metal Products witnessed the innovation and quality of his work; his family and friends saw his belief in independence, loyalty, hard work and desire to succeed.

And there were stories… stories of fun and mischief like throwing firecrackers in the backseat of a police car on the 4th of July while the officer slept in the front seat 60 years ago to family stories of making breakfast for his great grand-daughter each week in recent years. And there were stories of innovation, as George turned broken augers and straw choppers into a thriving business to stories of love for his family, demonstrated by cooking amazing meals, fishing countless hours with his grandchildren, and showing the beauty of Two Medicine in Glacier National Park.

George hunted, fished, bowled, and found his share of fun trouble in his early days. George’s passion for the outdoors led to countless stories, but what defined him was the love that he inspired. As George turned gravely ill over the month of November, family from Oregon to Hawaii to Colorado to Georgia traveled to Montana to see him one final time, sharing stories of days gone by and shedding tears of days to come without him.  George’s legacy lives on in his loved ones who learned from him, laughed with him, and loved him his entire life.

George is survived by his wife, Beverly Jean, and their three children Laura, Randy, and David. Laura and Vern Erickson’s children include Heather, Tyler, Logan, Taryn, and Nicole; Randy and Lisa Egan’s sons include Miles and Blake (Michelly); David Egan’s daughter is Josie. Heather’s daughter, Breauna, formed a close relationship with George in his later years. Logan and Alexis Erickson’s children include Luke, Bear and Nova. Duane Egan, brother, lives in Columbia Falls, MT.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Marie, his siblings Doug and Nancy and son Robert Michael.
