Dorothy (Rediske) Curry

January 27, 1921 — November 11, 2021

Valier

Dorothy Rediske Curry Dorothy Curry of Valier, Montana passed away on November 11, 2021, as a result of complications from a fall.

Dorothy was born January 27, 1921, in Slayton, near Lavina, MT. She was the oldest of three siblings. As a child, she walked to school the 2 miles to Cushman with her siblings and cousins. This began her lifetime habit of walking daily. At about the age of 10, Dorothy and her family moved to Roundup where she continued her schooling, graduating from Roundup High School. She attended business college in Billings, completing the 2- year course in just 9 months. She worked as a secretary in Billings and then married James Curry of Roundup on December 27, 1941. She followed him as he moved with the army until he was sent to Hawaii and she couldn’t go. When the war ended, they stayed in Roundup a short while, then moved to Valier seeking new opportunities. Dorothy was employed at the bakery. In 1951 they had the opportunity to purchase the co-op store where Jim had been working and together they began the Curry’s Market business.

Over the years, Jim and Dorothy accumulated land and livestock in addition to continuing the store. Dorothy enjoyed her family and friends and always kept her love of baking. She and Jim made many memories with their grandchildren at their ranch near Glacier Park. She loved the wildflowers and pretty rocks. She liked rockwork, building fireplaces, stone paths, and flowerbeds. Never one to be idle, Dorothy fixed fences, battled the weeds and gophers, and watched the kids run, fish, and explore. Having interest and talent for artwork of many kinds, Dorothy created several great pictures and greeting cards for her family and friends. Jim and Dorothy spent several winters in Arizona and made many close friends in their years there. As her vision declined, Dorothy searched for ways to fill her time, continuing to bake and make greeting cards until the last year of her life. She knew most of her recipes by heart. Dorothy was an amazing, strong, determined, talented, and very faith-filled woman. She was a good role model for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She created a tradition of Sunday coffee, goodies and conversation with her family after church each week.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings and her husband of over 60 years. She is survived by her son Gene (Cheryl) Curry, her daughter Marie (Ken) Offerdahl, 7 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
