In 1950, he went to work in Skagway, Alaska as a long shoreman on the docks. One of his favorite stories to tell was digging out under the Golden North Motel. He had to return to Minnesota because he was drafted into the Army. Charlie served in Korea from 1952-1954 as a heavy equipment operator. After serving his country, he returned to Alaska.
On March 15, 1958 he married Virginia Thomas Wright in Skagway, Alaska. They were married for almost 58 years when Virginia passed in 2016. They moved back to Minnesota in 1966 and to Montana in 1978. Then they moved to Arizona in 2010. Charlie moved back to Montana in 2017. Charlie and Virginia raised 7 children, 3 daughters and 4 sons.
Charlie is survived by his youngest brother, Cecil; his sons, Charles “Chuck” Rohlf, Trent Rohlf, and Jesse Rohlf; daughters, Martha Hobby and Earlla Nelson. Also surviving Charlie are nieces, nephews, 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; brothers, Walter “Ernie” Rohlf and Christopher “Chris” Rohlf; sisters, Elizabeth “Libby” Kittilson, Annie Ott, Beulah Nyberg; son, Jean Rohlf; and daughter, Marillen Walls.
He was a beloved man by many. In his younger years he participated in the Days of 98 Show in Skagway and had a train set he loved to put together. Charlie loved animals, especially birds. He was always a farm boy at heart and loved to stay busy. He was always joking around and giving people a hard time all out of fun. Charlie loved collecting old coins and antiques. Charlie and Virginia were involved in the community and church wherever they lived. He was always involved in his children’s lives.
Although, it is sad to have him leave this Earth, he has moved on to his eternal life with Our Heavenly Father.
