Vera was born on February 14, 1920 to Clayton and Amanda (Raaum) Hack in Malta. She was the second oldest of nine children. She graduated from Malta High School in 1937. Soon after graduation she moved to Cut Bank to work at the Ema Ann Bakery and Ice Cream Parlor where she met the love of her life Lloyd B. McClanahan. They were married March 18, 1942 in Rantoul, Illinois, while Lloyd was stationed at Chanute Field. On August 5, 1943 Vera gave birth to twin daughters Loy Marie and Loyce Lee in Boise, ID; on December 16, 1952 Mona was born in Great Falls, and on January 10, 1958 she gave birth to her youngest daughter Debbie in Cut Bank.
Vera loved the outdoors, adored her family, and enjoyed her church. She coached her daughter’s softball team and taught Sunday school for many years. In 1971 she and Lloyd bought a cabin in Essex, which they used for countless family gatherings. Vera was a long time member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of Norway, and always a supporter of local events and charities. In 2010 she was recognized by the Montana Story Telling Roundup for her “outstanding service to the community of Cut Bank.” Even in her later years Vera never lost her adventurous spirit. After retirement she and Lloyd went on numerous cruises and cross country road trips, at 86 years young she rode a jet ski for the first time, and she continued to enjoy weekend trips to her cabin through her last years.
