Chester

Beverly “Sue” Layton, 71, passed away on February 15, 2023 at Logan Health-Chester.

Sue was born September 12, 1951, in LaJunta, Colorado, to Alene “Linni” Sweet and Kenneth Maniford Fulton. In the 60’s her family relocated to Butte, Montana, where she lived until the mid ‘70s. She then made her way to Chester to work as an aide for the nursing home with her two children, Johnny and Tessa. While making Chester her home she met the love of her life, Gary Norman Layton, and they were married on May 15, 1985, and together they raised her two children.

Sue had a kind heart and was easy to love. She enjoyed being a caregiver to the elderly as well as to the young. Sue operated an in-home daycare for many years and was a certified nanny that traveled out of state to care for others. She simply loved children. You could always find her entertaining the little ones wherever she went. During her life she also served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, a motel attendant, bartender, waitress, museum guide, and this is a small list of the many ways she has served her family, friends, and community. In her spare time, she loved to sew. So much that one Christmas she made pajamas for all of the kids in the family. She also loved to do crossword puzzles, read, play cards, and work outside in the garden.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her stepdad, John O’Connor; her brothers, William “Bill” O’Connor and Ronnie Fulton; her sister, Wilma Grewell; and her son, Johnny Lee Sheldon.

Sue is survived by her husband, Gary Layton; her daughter, Contessa “Tessa”(Brand) Bryer;  her sister, Patsy (Brian) Penrose; her brother, Michael “Mike” O’Connor; several grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

No immediate memorial service is planned. The family will notify loved ones in the future when a service is scheduled.
