Sophia Kubis

March 20, 1925 — January 28, 2018

Long time Shelby resident Sophia Kubis died Sunday evening Jan 28, 2018, with family at her bedside following an illness at Missouri River Care Center. Mom was born Zofia Swietoniowski March 20, 1925 in a small village in Poland. She was eldest of many children, helping her mother and father on their small farm. During the German invasion of WW2, she was taken from Poland to German work farm where she met and married a detained Polish soldier, Walter Kubis, and had her first 3 children. Allied liberation offered an opportunity to relocate to the United States in 1949, displaced refugees were assigned new homes with assistance of Catholic Services. Zofia had 3 more children in MT, she cared for her children at home while father worked. She baked bread and pies, cooking Polish dishes and canning foods from the garden.

Zofia, Walter and their children also worked at night cleaning businesses after hours, she worked very hard, home maker doesn't cover all she did. When her last child was in school and her husband disabled from RR work, Zofia worked at the Toole County hospital and nursing home in the kitchen for the next 25 years, while still caring for her home, husband, children and grandchildren. Upon her retirement and Walter's death, Zofia continued to live independently until health issues required her to relocate to Great Falls' Missouri River Care Center where she was closer to family. She loved gardening vegetables and flowers, which she generously shared with family and friends, Zofia was the ultimate hostess, offering food and drink to anyone who came to the door. She loved her Catholic faith, the Mother Mary and was devout and diligent in raising her children in the Catholic Church. She was loved by most of the people she met and was always smiling, not wanting to be a bother and never complained, even at the end her life.
