Sheila L. Torgerson, 78, peacefully went home to be with Jesus on April 14, 2021. Sheila was born on December 22, 1942, in Missoula to Dale and Dorothy White, joining older brother Gary White. Sheila had a strong work ethic, beginning her career at JCPenney’s as a teenager, helping to meet the financial needs of her family. In 1960, she met the love of her life, Leif Torgerson. After dating for several years, they married on March 20, 1965. They made their initial home in Missoula. After a period of time, they moved to Ethridge. The first of three daughters, Jodie, would arrive. They would later add two more daughters, Lorie and Tricia, to their family. They lived a short time in Shelby and settled in Cut Bank. This remained her home until her death. Sheila worked at JCPenney’s for almost 30 years, the majority of that at the Cut Bank store where she made numerous friends in co-workers and customers that insisted Sheila be the one to help them.
Sheila was an avid gardener and thoroughly enjoyed every moment in her garden and flower beds. She was skilled in the kitchen, whether it was homemade dinner rolls, pot roast, cookies, or her famous banana bread. Sheila gifted hundreds and hundreds of loaves of banana bread to friends and church family over the years. She was also an avid reader, always with a book nearby. She was an accomplished seamstress, making her three daughters beautiful dresses. There was nothing she could not mend. She gave the most warm, genuine hugs and had a contagious laugh with a smile that lit up every room she entered. Above all, Sheila was the most faithful and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and truly a prayer warrior. She shared her love of Christ with her family and friends often. Her faith in Jesus was evident, and the Holy Spirit worked in her on a regular basis.
Sheila is survived by her husband of 56 years, Leif Torgerson; daughters, Jodie (Jeff) Chevillet, Lorie Martinez, Tricia (Jim) McEwen; her grandchildren, Brittany and Danny Chevillet, Courtney (Kiefer) McKay, Colby Martinez, Kate and Ben McEwen; and one great granddaughter, Rio.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Dorothy White and her brother, Gary White.
A special thank you to the Benefis staff for the wonderful care provided. The family is grateful beyond words for their time with Sheila. It most certainly was not enough time here on earth. There is peace in their hearts knowing she is waiting for them in Heaven.
