Marge Smitherman

April 18, 1933 — June 20, 2018

Margaret Bernice Smitherman “Aunt Marge,” 85, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Northern Rockies Medical Center in Cut Bank due to end-state COPD and recent pneumonia.

A memorial service will be held at Mountain View Baptist Church, 430 5th Ave. NW in Cut Bank on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 1:30 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are under the direction of Asper Funeral Home.

Margaret was born April 18, 1933 to George and Alice (Sorensen) Seymour.

She was most proud when she and her husband earned their GEDs together. She dearly loved her country schoolteacher Ms. Scalese, who would feed them lunch. She had to be home at 2 p.m. to help milk 17 cows. Margaret attended Shelby High School.

At the age of 18, she married Dalton Lakey Smitherman, Sr. on Oct. 25, 1951. Dalton was originally from East Bend, N.C. They were married for 46 years and Margaret was widowed for 21.

She was a good godly mother, great matriarch and marvelous mentor. She was always known for her hospitality and sharing over a cup of tea. Margaret had a strong work ethic. She worked as a housekeeper, CNA at Cut Bank Memorial Hospital, at the local dry cleaners, Coast to Coast, babysat the Magee kids, was a personal care attendant for Mrs. Bundy, ran a seasonal trailer court for custom cutters, and was a longtime gracious homemaker. She loved to cook, sew and read and loved gardening her yellow roses. She knit and bowled some and enjoyed fishing with her family. She also created some art pieces.

Margaret served faithfully as a local den mother for Cut Scouts and was a loyal member of the RLDS or Community of Christ Church. She loved animals, especially horses and Siamese cats.

Margaret took great pride in her Irish heritage and wore orange on St. Paddy’s Day. We know her Irish eyes are smiling down on us from heaven.

She was a fun, fiery lady with “Aunt Margeisms” like “Oh fiddlesticks.” She was known to love unconditionally by all in her midst and fed breakfast to neighbor kids in Walt Story’s trailer court.

She is survived by son Dalton Lakey Smitherman Jr. of Marion; daughter Margaret Mae Hall of Great Falls; daughter-in-law Montana Smitherman; sisters Caroline Lovins and Nina Waller; brothers Norman and James “Jim” Seymour; numerous nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dalton and son George James.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to NRMC, Dr. Fultz and Michelle Beebe, NP, for all the gentle love and care extended to our precious mother over the years. We appreciate you.

Memorial donations may be made to the nonprofit organization Outreach International, Kansas City, Mo., at outreachinternational.org.
