James Brantley Havens

December 30, 1940 — May 30, 2026

Conrad

The heavens called home a Wittle Toy Maker on Saturday, May 30, 2026. James “Jim” Havens passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 85½.

Jim was born to Jesse Havens and Winifred Kirsch. He spent his entire life in Conrad, Montana, aside from his service in the U.S. Navy, where he learned the plumbing trade. During Whoop‑Up, Jim met the love of his life, Claire Widhalm, at the Keg Family Restaurant. They dated for two weeks and were married six months later, on February 4, 1967. The couple later purchased the home built by Jim’s grandparents, Matt and Pearl Kirsch, where they raised their three children.

Jim’s plumbing skills led him to a long and dedicated career with the Montana Power Company as a Gas Serviceman, where he worked approximately 30 years before retiring. After retirement, he devoted himself to his woodshop, crafting countless toys and pieces of furniture for family and friends. His craftsmanship also contributed to the remodels of the Lariat Bar and Ed’s Tavern. In his free time, Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, and cheering on his favorite NASCAR race team.

Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Claire Havens, and their three children: Ann (Eric) Eileraas, Jeania (Jay) Cereck, and Robert (Randi) Havens. He leaves behind seven grandchildren—Jacque (Kyland) Santos, Natalie (Cory) Taylor, Ethan Eileraas, Alyssa Cereck, Ward Cereck, Jesse Havens, and Macey Havens—and three great‑grandchildren: Sada, Stanton, and Syrilla. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother Gene Havens, sister Carol (Roger) Thielmann, and nephew Kevin Thielmann.

A service will be held at Asper Funeral Homes, 302 S. Main Street, Conrad, MT, on June 13th at 10:00 AM. A graveside service and reception will follow at the Moose Hall.
