Gordon Olaf Smedsrud
July 16, 1956 – May 28, 2026
Gordon Olaf Smedsrud, beloved father, grandfather, brother, friend, and servant of God, passed away on May 28, 2026, at the age of 69.
Born on July 16, 1956, in Conrad, Montana, Gordon spent his childhood in Shelby and developed a lifelong love for the people and places of Montana's Hi-Line. Though he traveled widely and embraced many adventures throughout his life, his heart never strayed far from the community that raised him. The Smedsrud family farm near Ledger was one of his favorite places in the world, holding cherished memories from both his youth and later years.
Gordon was a man of deep faith whose relationship with God guided the way he lived his life. He found great comfort and joy worshiping at St. Olaf's Lutheran Church in Ledger, a place filled with memories of generations of family and friends he had known throughout his life.
Known throughout the community for his unmistakable laugh, generous spirit, and kind heart, Gordon was the person many turned to when they needed help. Whether offering a helping hand, sharing a meal, or simply listening, he gave freely of himself to others. His lifelong friendships brought him tremendous joy and purpose, and he treasured the many people he considered family.
Fishing and hunting were lifelong passions, and Gordon never ran short of stories from his many adventures outdoors. He was also an active member of the Kiwanis Club, where he dedicated countless hours to serving his community. Gordon was an exceptional cook who delighted in bringing people together through food. He loved making sushi, smoking meats and cheeses, frying freshly caught fish, and preparing meals for family and friends. For Gordon, the greatest joy was not in the cooking itself, but in sharing food with others. The more people gathered around his table, the happier he was.
Above all else, Gordon lived a life centered on faith, love, and service. He cared deeply for others and demonstrated God's love through his actions every day. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched through his generosity, compassion, friendship, and unwavering devotion to family and community.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Edna Smedsrud.
He is survived by his daughters, Amy Smedsrud-Whitten and Trish Smedsrud-Carpenter; his cherished grandchildren, Olivia Whitten, Wesley Gordon Whitten, Sarah Carpenter, and Amelia Carpenter; his siblings, Duane Smedsrud, Roger Smedsrud, and Lisa Hanson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and countless friends whom he considered family.
Gordon will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. We will remember his laughter, his generosity, his stories, his faith, and the remarkable way he made everyone feel welcome. He was a true Son of God whose life found purpose in loving and serving others.
A funeral service celebrating Gordon's life will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., officiated by his dear friend, Pastor Ken Waag. A viewing will be held at 9:00 a.m. prior to the service, with a luncheon reception immediately following. Committal services will take place at St. Olaf's Cemetery in Ledger at 1:30 p.m.
In the hearts of those who loved him, Gordon's laughter, faith, and generous spirit will live on forever.
