Coletta Irene Beebe Spangler Gottfried, 81, a long time Shelby business owner and former Mayor, passed away peacefully at her home in Helena on January 6, 2012, from natural causes. Visitation is Thursday, January 10, from 1:00 until 8:00 PM at the Whitted Funeral Chapel. Funeral services are 1:00 PM Friday, January 11, at the Community United Methodist Church in Shelby, with burial to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.
Survivors include daughter, Rexetta (Charles) Mueller of Helena; sons, Calvin (Patt) Spangler of Hayden, ID and Frank (Wanda) Spangler of Anaconda; sister, Connie Kahl of Rice Lake, WI; brother, Bill Pugh of Lawton, OK; as well as 7 grandchildren & 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Rex Spangler and Joe Gottfried.
Irene was born January 10, 1931 at Pocahontas, Iowa to Alvin & Aimee (Kibler) Beebe and grew up in Des Moines, Iowa where she was educated. She and Rex Spangler were married on June 14, 1947. They moved to Shelby in 1950; Rex died February 1, 1982. She later married Joe Gottfried November 17, 1984 at Shelby; he died June 3, 2008.
Rex and Irene owned and operated Shelby Floral for over 24 years. Irene served as Shelby’s Mayor from 1986 to 1990.
She was active in the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Professional Business Women, Soroptimist, the Lutheran Church, working in her yard, Garden Club and the VFW Auxiliary.
Irene was instrumental in the beautification of Shelby, promoting the planting of flowers and trees throughout the town.
