He spent his early years on a farm west of Collins, MT and the family moved several times to farms in different locations in the Conrad area. He and his family moved to Gallop City, southwest of Conrad, where he attended The Erickson School until he graduated from 8th grade. Then he attended High School in Conrad, graduating in 1955.

Carroll met Cleo (Hulburt) while they were both going to High School in Conrad. They got married on December 22, 1956. To this union were born sons Roger and Terry and daughter Linda.

Carroll and his brother, Marvin, started a business together, milking cows. Later, Carroll and Cleo moved into Conrad where he worked for a time with Bill Grubb and then worked for the City of Conrad for several years before going to work for Pondera County Road Department until he retired in 1997.

The years following his retirement were spent doing lots of camping, fishing and restoring old grain trucks.

Carroll was a Volunteer in The Conrad Fire Department from 1963 to 1989. After he retired from the Fire Department, he continued to stay close to the other firemen who were some of his closest friends. He went to Fire Conventions with these friends for many years even after his retirement.

Carroll was a member of the Moose Lodge in Conrad until his death. He held many offices during his years as a Moose.

In 2004, after 48 years of marriage, Carroll’s wife, Cleo, passed away. He met Gayle Roark at the Conrad Senior Center where she worked as a cook. They were married in June of 2006.
