Bob Smith

April 29, 1929 — January 17, 2018

Robert W. “Bob” Smith died on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 of natural causes at the Marias Medical Center in Shelby, MT.  He was 88 years old.  Services will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Whitted Funeral Chapel in Cut Bank at 10:30 AM.  Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery with military honors. A reception at The Den will be after the burial.

Bob was born on April 29, 1929 to Esther Grinsrud Smith and J W “Bill” Smith in Glendive.  The family continued to live in Ingomar and Glendive until 1939, when they moved to Cut Bank, MT.

Bob graduated from CBHS in 1947.  After some time in the Air Force and college, Bob and his father began farming and ranching West of Cut Bank.

In 1955, Bob married Claire L. Pendergress at the home of Chuck and Jean Cooper in Cut Bank, MT.  They continued the farming and ranching business for over 60 years.

Bob is survived by his daughters: Pamela Armstrong-Withers of Cut Bank and Billiette (Greg) Brooks of Dillon, MT, his niece Nancy (Chuck) Carrington Miller, his nephew William Carrington of Seattle, WA, his sister-in-law Mary Schnee of Great Falls, MT, his brothers-in-law Jim Pendergress of Jacksonville, FL and John Pendergress of Redmond, WA.  In addition, Bob is survived by his grandchildren:  Andria Smith Weiss of Missoula, MT, Brandon (Jessa) Brooks of Whitefish, MT, Bobbi-Jo Brooks (Patrick) Meuleman of Boise, ID, Coleman “Coley” (Lindsey) Armstrong of Mountlake Terrace, WA, and Jacob (Jordan) Armstrong of Whitefish, MT.  There are also 6 surviving great-grandchildren: Austin and Sophia Weiss, Gracie-Mae Brooks, Wyatt and Wayne Meuleman, and Gwendolyn Armstrong.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Anna and Ted Pendergress, his sister and her husband Janice and Bill Carrington, his son Raleigh Robert Smith, his son-in-law Dave Withers, and his wife Claire P. Smith, who passed just 28 days ago.

No one worked harder than Bob and Claire on their farm and ranch.  May they rest in peace.
